Recently caught Adrian in concert with his new "power trio"... remarkable. Staggering, what can I say. It was a small venue and I got the priviledge of talking to him. Such a nice guy.. my wife joyously got a shirt signed by him and the siblings. They played a bunch of Crimson stuff as well as plenty of older solo Adrian songs in addition to some of the new stuff. Julie and Eric are stunning young musicians. Julie was playing stuff from Tony, and Les Claypool... don't tell me that doesn't take guts. Adrian was all over the place playing lead, switching into the "bass" part so Julie could take lead. All of them were clearly enjoying themselves. Adrian is always such a joy. It reminded me of when I saw him with the Bears... same kind of energy (maybe more, if possible). No Fender Mustangs.. but still neck bending (with a MUCH more expensive guitar). Now I have Adrian, Robert and Tony's signatures. I've seen Bruford but no luck getting his signature yet :)

So many surprises! And now I finally understand what the link is between "Red" and "Discipline"......it's so audible......I can really hear it.........in songs like "Breathless", "Disengage" and "North Star".........and, really, can anyone think of any other moment on any other album that's as poignant as Peter Gabriel singing "Here Comes The Flood"? That one really hits home, especially after last year's hurricane season...

So what's your favorite Krim side project and why?

For the purposes of this question, I'd say include all the solo albums of the various members. and albums where they were on most of the tracks and were the most famous member of the band. So exclude things like Fripp's work with Bowie or Belew (and Fripp's) work with Talking Heads, and Bruford's with Yes.

I'd have to say mine is Sunday all over the world. I like it because of the interesting interplay between Fripp and Gunn for the most part. Toyah's vocals work for me, though I know that they drive some people nuts. If you recall that band that got a lot of indie radio play a few years ago, Life Without Buildings, it's amazing how much that Sue Tompkins of LWB took from Toyah's vocals on the SOATW disc.

honorable mentions:
Trey Gunn-- third star. the songwriting is a step up from Trey's thousand Years album, and the playing is tight.

League of Gentlemen -- Sara Lee (later of B52s) and Barry Andrews (previously of XTC) help create a bouyant new wave backdrop to Fripp's angular guitar. There are some missteps, but overall, it pays off.

Adrian Belew-- Mr. Music Head -- I haven't heard all of Belew's albums, but of the ones I've hear, this is the most enjoyable. His minor hit of "Oh Daddy" is a pretty well crafted pop song, and there are some other gems on here, but like all of Belew's work, it's uneven.

League of Crafty Guitarists-- Show of hands -- this may actually violate the standards I set above, since fripp is not on most tracks, though his name is on the cover. It does showcase a nice range of songs and approaches to the crafty style, and the eerie acapella singing. it's a great album.

There is a guest appearance by our good buddy Adrain Belew on a couple of tracks. Adrain does add an interesting dimension to the Porcupine Tree sound. Also appearing is Otepth's Mikael Akerfeldt who also adds to the metal sound.

If Adrain is not enough of a KC connection, Porcupine Tree will have Fripp joining for their show in SF at the Fillmore (I'm so there!).

Murphy knew who he had backing him up on bass and knew he had to give up the stage for a few minutes. It was pretty cool.

Les Claypool is on bass and Danny Carey from Tool on drums for a few songs. The music is as amazing as the line up suggests. Very Crimsonesque and not much of the sappy pop stuff I usually associate with Belew's solo work. The trio will return on the third instalment. It would have been nice to hear a whole album from that line up, but it'll probably help sell more cds that way.

I think that is an excellent philosophy, and holds equally well for attaining a true understanding and appreciation of King Crimson's music.

In that vein, I'd like to share my recent experience of turning a roommate friend of mine on to King Crimson. Late one night, I was playing some random MP3's when he came home. I think it was The Great Curve (Talking Heads) at the moment. I decided to play him some King Crimson after that and chose Three of a Perfect Pair (the song). He sat down on the futon couch and within about 15 seconds, closed his eyes, leaned his head back and just listened quietly. I watched him gently move his head in time to the music. About a minute later, he said simply, "Beautiful." He was hooked. The next day, he told me that he listened to that tune 21 times!!!

Since then, I've taken up listening to their albums after several months of being "on hiatus" (for some really dumb reason, I imagine). I highly recommend sharing KC with someone new who you suspect would like it, so as to inject some freshness into your listening pleasure.

Wow! I just acquired a couple of Crimson-related releases, those being: "Side One" by Adrian Belew and "The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles & Fripp."

First off, let me say that Belew's new CD, is excellent. The first three tracks are Ade playing in a power trio, featuring none other than Les Claypool (Primus) on bass, and Danny Carey (Tool) on drums. Some of it is straight forward and funky, some of it is relaxing and some of it is way out there. The playing is superlative, just listen to "Writing On The Wall," "Madness" and "Under The Radar". Just what I like and just what we've come to expect from the Twang Bar King! I really do recommend this to anyone who likes Belew's material. The only shame is that with a guitarist as good as he is, there aren't any lessons in any guitar magazine on the newsstands for anyone who wants to learn his style and there won't be anything more than a sidebar article mentioning this particular release.

Secondly, a month ago I happened to pick up GG&F's "Brondesbury Tapes" CD and I was absolutely astounded. Now that I've just received "Cheerful Insanity" it confirms my suspicions about the group. Or should I say, the musicians? The degree and the calibre of the material--even though it seems off-the-wall and overtly humorous to the point of being whimsical--proves that, especially in the case of Robert Fripp and Michael Giles, these guys can play just about any type of music they want to.

I apologize if this is slightly off topic, but it's slow in here, and the sound and feel of Belew's work as stunt guitarist on Remain in Light, and on this newly released disc, is a direct precursor to his initial work with King Crimson.

the name of this band is talking heads is a must have, not just for Belew's work, but it's a darn good reason, and as good enough as any other.

buy it.

I've been looking through it and it looks incredibly comprehensive. It's got everything in there from front to back, everything you've ever wanted to know about the Great Crim. Everything from GG&F to Heavy ConstruKction.

Has anyone else read this? I'd like to know other fans' opinions. I think I'm gonna slip in "Neil and Jack and Me."

Last nite I saw 21st CENTURY SCHIZOID BAND!
The line-up consists of the following members of King Crimson's 1969-1974 incarnations: Mel Collins, Ian MacDonald, Ian Wallace, and Peter Giles. A "new" guy, Jakko M. Jaksyk, is handling guitar and lead vocals. The show was at a small, pleasant, comfortable venue with good sound, the smaller of the two stages at Birchmere Theatre in Alexandria, VA. They were playing old Crimson, McDonald & Giles, & Ian McDonald material with some new, original stuff and it was GREAT! Jaksyk often delivered the lead vocal to my ear with more passion and fluidity than Lake & Wetton in the studio at least. He's a fantastic guitar player also, not quite as precise and delicate live as Fripp w/ Crimson in studio, but very passionate, very dynamic, with lightning chops.

It's quite a band. The old material holds up very well, the show didn't feel like a "nostalgia" or "comeback" or "reunion" incident, they have synergy and juice NOW. Let me tell ya, these guys are helping give middle age a good name. This has gotta be one of the best things going in prog at the moment.

As I type this I'm listening for the second time to a CD I picked up at the show. It consists of live material from the band's gigs last year in Italy, plus one studio recording of current material. The CD's good but I don't think the performances are quite as strong and tight as what I just heard at the Birchmere--they've had an additional year to play the material together since the CD was recorded.

Some of these projeckts have been branches that follow apparent (to us lovers of progressive music) paths. Others are obscure and come into sight through curious connections.

I suggest sharing obscure knowledge of “Crimson” connections. Particularly, connections that other King Crimson fans would not normally discover.

So, let me start….

There are clear links to Brian Eno, the godfather of ambient music. However, the links to one of the most prolific ambient artists, Steve Roach, is by no means obvious. Here is a link to one of Steve’s newest releases:
http://www.steveroach.com/Music/discography.php?albumID=224

Check it out. Robert is a contributor to this tribal ambient soundscape. It is a new direction for Robert. Who knows where it will lead.
